In math, third graders are learning about data while interpreting and creating picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots.They are also learning to measure to the nearest half inch and quarter inch and use that data to create line plots.In social studies, students are learning about the United States government, as well as the countries we’ve been studying this year: Angola, Italy, Mexico, Egypt, Japan, and Argentina.In reading and writing, third graders are continuing a study of traditional tales, strengthening writing about theme and characters.Students are also learning about different kinds of conflicts, and how authors use dialogue to advance a plot, develop characters, and communicate themes.The class looks forward to studying other traditional tales and planning their own stories.

Third graders have been strengthening their fraction skills and will now begin a unit on measurement where they will work on telling time, on determining elapsed time, on measuring liquid volume, and on measuring mass.In reading and writing, the students have begun a study of traditional tales from around the world.While reading variations of Cinderella stories, they are comparing and contrasting story elements within these stories and developing strong opinion writings.In science, the students learned about animal adaptations.Each class recently completed a lab where they were able to explore bird beak adaptations.Students chose different tools, such as different sized tweezers, tongs, and spoons, to “eat” different foods from trays of soil.The students  were also able to see hands-on how different beaks help birds access and eat the foods they need to survive.

This month, third graders entered the world of fractions. They learned to identify unit fractions and pieces of a whole. During reading and writing, we finished our weather and climate study. Students selected a weather phenomenon to research while exploring multiple sources to answer six focus questions.We are looking forward to publishing our newspaper articles.In social studies students learned about economics around the world. Students had the opportunity to create and design their own product. Afterwards, they determined how their product would fit into our economy by evaluating whether they would have a high or low supply and demand.

It’s been a busy month for third grade students. In math, the students are using their newly learned multiplication and division skills to solve multi-step word problems.In science they are continuing the study of forces and motion. The students have begun their  study of weather and climate as it relates to informational reading and writing. They are also identifying non-fiction text features and their importance for a reader, and while doing so, are researching different weather phenomena and synthesizing the information into a well-developed writing piece. It has been a very fun and productive month for the students.
